The Life Science Experimental Teaching Center of Guangxi University was established in 2003, originally as the Central Laboratory of Guangxi Agricultural College. Since 1985, with the utilization of funds from the World Bank and other sources, a large number of advanced instruments and equipment were purchased, making it one of the earliest units in China to engage in molecular biology research and experimental teaching. In 2007, it was recognized as a Guangxi Autonomous Region-level Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center. In 2015, to better promote the construction of virtual simulation experimental teaching resources and enhance the functionality and level of the existing platform, the "Biological Science and Engineering Virtual Simulation Experimental Teaching Center" was established based on the Comprehensive Strength Enhancement Project Plan for Universities in Central and Western China. In 2016, it was rated as a regional-level virtual simulation experimental teaching center.
The total construction area of the central laboratory is 4,450.94 square meters, including three specialized laboratories in biological science, biotechnology, and bioengineering, an on-campus bioengineering training base, a virtual simulation and bioinformatics laboratory, and an integrated and innovative open experimental platform for undergraduates. The total value of undergraduate platform equipment is 33,942,007.88 yuan, with a total of 1,163 units. The total value of equipment worth over 100,000 yuan is 18,008,204.36 yuan, with a total of 81 units, more than half of which are imported.
The layout of the experimental teaching center is scientifically reasonable, with complete safety facilities and systems. It implements informationized and networked auxiliary teaching, with open and shared experimental teaching resources. As a public experimental teaching platform of Guangxi University, the center not only undertakes the experimental teaching tasks for three undergraduate majors in biotechnology, bioengineering, and biopharmaceuticals of our college but also offers experimental courses in microbiology, biochemistry, and comprehensive bioengineering for several other colleges of the university. Additionally, it provides a venue for scientific research innovation practice and technological activities for undergraduate theses, student experimental skills and innovation capability training projects, and the University Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Training Program. After more than a decade of development, the center has become a life science experimental teaching base that meets the needs of talent cultivation at our university, with sophisticated facilities, reasonable configuration, and advanced management.
